가시철사가 더 이상 장애물이 아닐 때...
2013년 6월에 창동 레지던스 프로그램에 참가하기 위해 마산에 도착했을 때 나는 활기찬 근대도시를 보았다. 마산이란 이름이 창원과의 합병으로 사라졌지만 이곳 주민들이 자신들의 도시, 정신, 문화, 역사에 고착되어 있다는 사실을 확인한 것은 대단히 흥미로운 일이다. 그렇다면 이들은 화해시켜야 할 두 개의 긴장을 가지고 있는 셈이다. 그 하나는 전진의 욕망을 간직한 채 자신의 뿌리에 충실하는 것이고, 다른 하나는 그들의 공동 유산을 활성화시키기 위해 미래로 나아가는 것이다. 
 이 레지던스 프로그램에 참가하는 동안 나는 무기 부품들을 소재로 작업을 계속할 생각이다. 모든 형태의 폭력의 소멸을 통해 평화의 도래를 이루기 위한 수단으로 과일을 선택했고, 이것을 중심으로 나의 사색을 전개하고자 한다.
 이번 설치미술 작품은 천정에 고정된 철사에 의해 수직방향으로 걸려있는 사과들을 보여준다. 천정에서 사과에 이르는 철사의 부분은 가시가 그대로 있지만 사과를 관통한 후 땅으로 가는 부분의 철사는 완전히 제거되어 누드상태가 된다. 
 사랑의 상징인 사과는 전쟁과 폭력을 사라지게 만드는 부적과 같다. 가시철사는 사과를 관통하며 사과로부터 영양분을 제공받으면서 무장해제 된다. 이처럼 철사는 공격적인 날카로운 가시를 벗어버림으로써 적대적인 기능을 상실하는 것이다. 무기가 사랑의 과일에 의해 과일의 줄기로 변형된다. 이 줄기는 콤파스의 바늘처럼 우리에게 평화를 얘기하는 철학으로 향하는 길을 보여준다. 여기서 유일한 규칙은 전쟁 대신 사랑을 하는 것이다. 

When barbed wire is no longer a barrier
 When I arrrived in Masan this June to join the Changdong Artist Residency program 2013, I found an active modern city. It is also interesting to see that, even if the name of Masan will disappear by merging with Changwon city, people will always remain attached to their hometown, their original city, its spirit, its culture, its history.  So, they have two axes to reconcile: to remain faithful to their roots keeping going to steam ahead, going towards the futureto make their common inheritance alive.
 During the Changdong Artist Residency program 2013, I wanted to go on working with weapons components, building a reflexion around the fruit as a tool to make advent the peace by the disappearance of every form of violence.
 The installation art shows an apple crossed in a vertical way by a wire stucked from the ceiling ; the wire is barbed before it crosses the apple, but the same wire is totally denudated after crossing the apple to go down to the ground.
 The apple, which symbolizes love, is like the talisman which makes disappearing war and violence: when the barbed wire crosses the fruit and is nourished by the fruit, it becomes disarmed; disarmed of its sharp and aggressive nails, disarmed of its belligerent function. A weapon is transformed by the fruit of love to become its stalk, a stalk as the arrow, the needle of a compass which is showing us the way towards a philosophy which talks about peace, whose only rule is to make love instead of making war.
